Big 12 Members Eye Cross Country Regionals

The Big 12 will be represented by 15 members in the NCAA NCAA Cross Country Regionals on Friday, Nov. 14, with a trip to the NCAA Championships on the line.

Utah and Oklahoma State were tabbed as host schools by the NCAA in the Mountain and Midwest Region, respectively.

The UCF women’s team starts the day for the Conference in the South Region in Huntsville, Alabama, at 8:30 a.m. CT.

Both the men’s and women’s teams of defending national champion BYU, Colorado and Texas Tech will be joined by Utah’s women’s team in the Mountain Region Championship.

The South Central Region sees a trio of Houston, Baylor and TCU head to Fayetteville, Arkansas.

In the West Region, Arizona will be the conference’s lone representative as it travels to Sacramento, California.

Heading back to the Midwest Region, four programs are set to go to Stillwater with Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State and Oklahoma State.
Cincinnati (Great Lakes Regional) and West Virginia’s women’s team (Mid-Atlantic Regional) round out the Conference’s teams in Evansville, Indiana and Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, respectively.

The top two placing teams at each of the nine regional locations will receive an automatic bid to the national championships on Saturday, Nov. 23 in Columbia, Missouri at the Gans Creek Cross Country Course. Another 14 at-large teams will be selected by the NCAA Division I Cross Country Subcommittee. Thirty-eight individuals will be selected to participate in each championship through an automatic qualifier and at-large selection process. The first four regional finishers not from an automatic qualifying or at-large team also secure an auto-bid to the championships.

The Big 12 leads the nation with four programs ranked inside the top 10 of the men’s and women’s coaches’ polls. On the women’s side, the Big 12 is tied for the most teams ranked in the top 30 with six.

Oklahoma State (men’s) and BYU (women’s) sit at No. 1. Iowa State is slated at No. 2 in the men’s poll followed by No. 6 Colorado and No. 10 BYU. Iowa State and West Virginia are ranked in tandem at No. 6 and No. 7 in the women’s poll, with No. 9 Oklahoma State, No. 17 Colorado and No. 22 Utah rounding out the Big 12 teams.
