2024 Big 12 Tennis Postseason Awards Announced

The Conference announced the All-Big 12 teams, position champions and individual yearly awards for the 2024 Big 12 tennis season.

Texas swept the men’s awards highlighted by Eliot Spizzirri winning his second consecutive Big 12 Player of the Year accolade. Gilles-Arnaud Bailly took home Big 12 Freshman of the Year to give the Longhorns the award for the third time in the last four seasons. Jonah Braswell earned the first Big 12 Newcomer of the Year award for the Longhorns since 2008 (Ed Corrie). Bruce Berque completed the sweep for Texas as he received his third career Big 12 Coach of the Year, also receiving the distinction in 2019 and 2021.

On the women’s side, Oklahoma State accumulated three of the four yearly awards. Ange Oby Kajuru became the fourth Cowgirl in program history to earn Big 12 Player of the Year and the first since 2021. Olivia Lincer captured Big 12 Women’s Tennis Freshman of the Year for UCF and OSU’s Anastasiya Komar received Big 12 Newcomer of the Year. Chris Young rounded out the women’s awards with his second career Big 12 Coach of the Year after leading OSU to an undefeated regular season.

Spizzirri entered the Conference championship ranked No. 1 in the ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings for the second consecutive year. He is 26-4 on the season with a 18-3 dual matches record with a 5-1 mark against Big 12 opponents. He is the first to win the award outright in consecutive years since Costin Paval (Oklahoma) did so in 2012-13.

Kajuru joins Bunyawi Thamchaiwat (2021), Viktoriya Lushkova (2015) and Marla Phillips (2001) as the only Cowgirls to win the women’s newcomer award. She finished the year 34-7 in singles, including an 18-3 record in the spring, with six wins over nationally ranked opponents to keep her in the top 10 of the ITA singles rankings the entire season.

Gilles-Arnaud Bailly joined his teammate and brother Pierre-Yves Baily as the only brothers to win Big 12 Men’s Tennis Freshman of the Year after Pierre-Yves won the award in 2022. The undeclared freshman recorded a 17-3 overall mark and finished a perfect 5-0 in Conference play.

Lincer became the first Knight to win a yearly award in UCF’s debut season in the Conference. The Klodzko, Poland native won four of her final five matches of the regular season at the No. 3’s position.

Braswell became the second Longhorn in program history to secure Big 12 Men’s Tennis Newcomer of the Year. The sophomore transfer from Florida finished the season 16-5 overall in singles and 8-2 in dual matches.

Komar became the fourth Cowgirl to be awarded the Big 12 Women’s Tennis Newcomer of the Year distinction and the second in three years for the Cowgirls. The redshirt sophomore who transferred from LSU, went 26-11 on the year and 12-6 in spring season. She will make her second appearance in both the NCAA singles and doubles individual championships.

Berque received his first Coach of the Year honor since 2021 after leading Texas to its first Big 12 Championship title since 2018 and second consecutive regular season title. The Longhorns won their third regular season title in five seasons and finished league play undefeated for the sixth time in program history.

Young was named the Big 12 Women’s Tennis Coach of the Year for the first time since 2016. He led OSU to its first Big 12 Women’s Tennis regular season title outright since 2016. Under Young’s tutelage, the Cowgirls joined Baylor and Texas as the third program in Conference history to finish undefeated multiple times after a 9-0 league record in 2016. Oklahoma State also finished the regular season with a perfect 24-0 record to mark the first time in program history to not record a regular-season loss.

The Oklahoma State women led the way with seven All-Big 12 selections in singles and doubles. OSU’s Ange Oby Kajuru and Anastasiya Komar were named unanimously for both singles and doubles by a vote by the league’s head coaches. The Big 12 position champion awards, which are awarded to those individuals who finish with the most victories in a position (minimum of three matches for men, and six matches for women) are listed below.
