Arizona State’s Emilija Tverijonaite (women’s) and Niels Villard (men’s) were named as the Big 12 Tennis Players of the Week for matches through April 6.
Tverijonaite led the Sun Devils’ to an undefeated weekend against Texas Tech and Colorado. In Friday’s match versus the Red Raiders, the junior paired with Aiya Nupbay to win their doubles match, 6-2, over Elena Daskalova and Mariia Hlahola. Tverijonaite then clinched the match defeating TTU’s Hailey Murphy, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. From the top singles court against Colorado, Tverijonaite earned her point with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Aya El Sayed. This is her second Conference honor this season, after earning Player of the Week in January.
On the men’s side, Villard posted an undefeated 3-0 weekend. Against Texas Tech, the sophomore clinched the match for the Sun Devils defeating TTU’s Thiago Guglieri, 7-6 (6), 5-7, 7-6 (7). On Sunday, Villard paired with Shu Matsuoka to seal the doubles point defeating Oklahoma State’s Ian Bracks and Derek Pham, 7-5. He then earned the final point of the match dispatching OSU’s Aaron Williams, 7-5, 6-4.
