ASU’s Compton, BU’s Calder, TCU’s Cramer and Utah’s McAnelly Named Big 12 Baseball Weekly Award Recipients

Arizona State’s Brandon Compton (player), Baylor’s Ethan Calder (co-pitcher), TCU’s Cole Cramer (newcomer) and Utah’s Colter McAnelly (co-pitcher) collected the Big 12 baseball weekly awards for the opening weekend.

Compton led the Sun Devils to a 4-0 week including a season-opening sweep against Ohio State. The sophomore outfielder plated a Conference-leading eight runs with four coming in the series finale against the Buckeyes. He tagged the second-most RBIs in the Conference (9), spotlighted by a walk-off 2-RBI double to clinch the series. On Monday, he did it again with another go-ahead hit that tallied two RBIs against Austin Peay to break a 3-3 tie. Compton finished with an on-base percentage of .579 and the third-most total bases (14) in the Conference. It is the Buckeye, Arizona native’s first career weekly honor.

Calder made his season debut as the Bears’ opening-day starter with a win against Youngstown State. The lefty recorded a career-high 13 strikeouts out of the 18 batters he faced in five innings. The 13 strikeouts led the Conference and were the most by a Bear on Opening Day since at least 2003. He is the fourth Baylor pitcher in the last 22 years to reach double digits in strikeouts in a season opener and the most since Logan Verrett tagged 14 in a complete game shutout in 2011. The junior allowed only two hits and one walk to earn the first Conference weekly accolade of his career.

McAnelly delivered a six-inning start against Pepperdine to help the Utes come away with a 3-1 victory. The six innings pitched tied for the most in the Big 12 for opening week as he held the Waves to one run on two hits and one walk. The sophomore right-handed pitcher finished with four strikeouts and retired 16 of his next 18 batters after a leadoff homer. Only one Pepperdine runner advanced past second base with McAnelly on the mound. It is the first Big 12 weekly award of his career.

Cramer was one of two Frogs to hit safely in all four matchups to start the season. The Arlington, Washington native opened the season with a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the 10th inning of Friday’s match to complete a TCU rally from a 4-0 deficit. His best came in the series finale against San Diego as he finished 3-for-5 for two runs, one double, two home runs, and three RBI, with his second home run being a go-ahead and eventual game-winner to lead off the ninth.
