BYU’s Dybantsa Uses 30-Point Triple-Double To Win MBB Weekly Awards

BYU’s AJ Dybantsa earned his first career Big 12 Men’s Basketball Player of the Week and Newcomer of the Week awards after notching his first career triple-double in the Cougars’ 109-81 win over Eastern Washington.

Dybantsa posted only the second 30-point triple-double in Big 12 history, and the first of the points/rebounds/assists variety. The Brockton, Massachusetts native finished with 33 points, 10 rebounds and a career-high 10 assists, making him the first power conference freshman to post a triple-double this season. The forward has back-to-back games of 30 points, the first Cougar to accomplish the feat since 2018 and is the first Big 12 freshman to start his career with 13 consecutive double-digit scoring games since Trae Young in 2017-18. While these mark his first weekly awards of the season, he was previously honored four times on the Big 12 Starting Five, which honors strong performances from across the league.

Dybantsa was joined on this week’s Starting Five by Baylor’s Tounde Yessoufou, Cincinnati’s Baba Miller, Iowa State’s Joshua Jefferson and Texas Tech’s Christian Anderson. Yessoufou helped Baylor become the first power conference team since 1996-97 to score 110+ points in three consecutive games in a 124-61 win over Arlington Baptist, while becoming the first Baylor player with a stat line of 28 points, seven rebounds, five assists and six steals, in a single game. Miller had 11 points and 21 rebounds—the most for a Big 12 player this season—while adding seven assists in the Bearcats’ 89-62 win over Lipscomb. Jefferson had his fifth 20-point game of the season, scoring 23 with seven rebounds and five assists in a 89-61 win over Houston Baptist. Anderson scored 29 points in an 87-57 win over Winthrop, adding six rebounds and five assists to his ledger, entering the top 25 nationally in scoring.
