TCU Claims Big 12 Men’s Tennis Championship

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The second-seeded TCU Horned Frogs knocked off top-seeded Texas 4-1 to claim their first Big 12 Men’s Tennis Championship since 2017 and third in program history Sunday afternoon at Kansas’ Jayhawk Tennis Center.

Luc Fomba was named Most Outstanding Player after going a combined 4-0 in singles and doubles against Oklahoma State and Texas including the clincher against UT. The senior tallied two ranked singles wins with victories over OSU’s No. 91-ranked Isaac Becroft and Texas’ No. 23-ranked Pierre-Yves Bailly.

The Horned Frogs started the scoring by securing the doubles point in the one and two spots. Sebastian Gorzny and Pedro Vives defeated UT’s Bailly and Siem Woldeab 6-3 on court two before Jake Fearnley and Fomba overcame a 5-4 deficit to win via tiebreaker, 7-6 (5) against Cleeve Harper and Eliot Spizzirri.

Spizzirri briefly evened it up at one apiece with a 6-1, 6-4 straight-sets victory on court one before TCU’s Lui Maxted retook the lead for the Horned Frogs with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Nevin Arimilli.

In the five spot, Gorzny rallied after dropping the first set to grab a pair of 6-1 victories over Texas’ Harper and extend the lead to 3-1. With two other courts still in action, Fomba followed suit at court two to secure the championship for TCU as he recorded 6-4 and 6-3 second and third sets, respectively, over Bailly.
